Because the warthog will be over 3.5 tons when loaded, we need a heavy duty drivers licence to drive the beast. So there we were, after more than 30 years of driving each, buying a ‘Learner’s Licence’ book and studying road signs again.
Luckily (on my part) and obviously (on Nige’s), we both passed the learner’s licence first time around. Then it was on to finding driving lessons. We found a driver training centre in Parow, and off we went for our first lesson.
My trainer is a laid-back lady who happily let me loose on their truck without so much as checking that I knew the back end from the front end. Thankfully, I think that my days of driving our big Landrover without power steering left me in good stead to take on this beast of a truck. Driver training centre trucks have obviously been to hell and back with various learners using them, and they do rattle and roll along. No Iveco luxury for our lessons! But, so far, so good!
Next step: the actual driving licence.
