Although I am not mad keen on cities, we have really enjoyed Buenos Aires. The city seems to be a wonderful mix of civilised (first world) and relaxed (developing). You can sit in a sidewalk café and think you’re in Paris … until a man comes along and tries to sell you some socks, and a distinctly not roadworthy truck drives past. And the taxi drivers still drive like maniacs, with one arm hanging out the window.

We arrived at an exciting time – firstly, a long weekend in Argentina, then the demonstration (street party) for the outgoing president, to be followed by the demonstration (street party) for the incoming president. All happening within a few blocks of our hotel.

We saw the grave of Evita Peron, and also saw, at the street party, just how influential Evita still is – political banners still carry her name and image. Images of the second most influential person we saw all over La Boca: Maradonna, who played for Boca Juniors. He is a god here (although he apparently now lives in Dubai).
