Visited Stonehenge, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, today. Stonehenge is the most famous and sophisticated prehistoric stone circle in the world, and archaeologists believe it was constructed, in phases, from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. They still don’t know why it was built, or what is was used for. Theories include that it was an observatory of the moon (a physical calendar, as it were), a temple, and a cemetery. None of the theories are really fully supported by the available evidence, so the mystery remains!

What is incredible is just HOW it was made, at the time, with the available tools. Some of the rocks weigh as much as 40 tons each, and some were brought to Stonehenge from more than 200 miles away! The stones were carved as required, and put together like woodwork – with joints and sockets carved into the stone. Then obviously there was the issue of getting them upright, not to mention getting that pesky horizontal bit on top! Methinks these ancient beings had a bright engineer or two amongst them!
